Since 2018, 403 students have died who were pursuing their academic courses in foreign countries. This data was provided by the Ministry of External Affairs in Parliament. The Ministry attributed these deaths to natural causes, health-related problems, accidents, etc.,
Canada has the highest number of deaths with 91 since 2018, followed by Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia. According to the Ministry, an estimated 1.34 million Indians were pursuing their academics in foreign countries in 2022.
While 48 students died while studying in the UK, 40 died in Russia, 36 in the USA, 35 in Australia, and 20 in Ukraine. According to the official numbers from the Ministry, the number of Indians who are studying abroad is approximately 13 lakh in Australia, Canada, the UK, the US, Ireland, and New Zealand combined. The USA has 4.65 lakh Indian students, the UK has 55,465 students, Australia 1 lakh and Canada has 1,83, 301 Indian students studying.
