Karpoori Thakur to be awarded Bharat Ratna poshtumously

Former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur will be awarded India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna posthumously. Karpoori Thakur is known as the socialist icon and is well known for his efforts to uplift the backward classes in Bihar. Rashtrapati Bhavan officially stated, “The President has been pleased to award Bharat Ratna to Shri Karpoori Thakur (posthumously).”

Karpoori Thakur was born in the year 1924 and breathed his last in 1988. He was an integral part of the freedom movement and played a key role in the Quit India Movement. He was first elected as MLA in the year 1952 and has won every subsequent election since then. Karpoori Thakur was known for his modest life and his fight against social injustice. He worked as CM of Bihar from (1970-71, and 1977-79).

Karpoori Thakur’s 100th birth anniversary will be celebrated this year on January 24th and the announcement of Bharat Ratna comes a few hours before it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “I am delighted that the Government of India has decided to confer the Bharat Ratna on the beacon of social justice, the great Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji, and that too at a time when we are marking his birth centenary. This prestigious recognition is a testament to his enduring efforts as a champion for the marginalized and a stalwart of equality and empowerment.”
