The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He is set to succeed the current CJI, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who is scheduled to retire on May 13, 2024.
Justice Gavai, who hails from Maharashtra, will become the 51st Chief Justice of India if appointed. He will also be the second Dalit to hold the country’s top judicial post. The Collegium’s recommendation is based on seniority and his long-standing service in the judiciary.
