FASTag Out, GPS-Based Tolling In from May 1

Starting May 1, India will shift from FASTag to a GPS-based toll collection system. The new system, powered by GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), will charge vehicles based on the distance traveled on national highways—no need to stop at toll booths anymore.

How GNSS-Based Tolling Works

Under the GNSS system, vehicles will be fitted with On-Board Units (OBUs). These OBUs track movement via satellites and calculate toll fees based on actual distance covered. Payments are deducted automatically from linked bank accounts or digital wallets.

Benefits of GPS Tolling Over FASTag

  • No More Toll Booth Stops: Smooth, non-stop highway travel
  • Distance-Based Charges: Pay only for the distance you drive
  • Reduced Traffic & Pollution: Less congestion at toll plazas
  • More Transparency: Automated, real-time toll calculation reduces errors and misuse

Privacy and Data Security with GNSS

The system ensures user privacy by keeping data within national boundaries using India’s own NavIC satellite system. Authorities have emphasized that data security and user consent will be key.

Rollout Plan: Who Gets It First?

The GNSS toll system will launch in phases. Initially, it will apply to commercial vehicles like trucks and buses. Private vehicles will be included later once the system is stable and OBUs are widely available.
