Bilkis Bano Case: Supreme Court quashes early release of 11 convicts
The Supreme Court today quashed the early release of the 11 lifetime imprisonment men. It is well known that the Gujarat government in August 2022 granted remission to those convicts on the eve of Independence Day. During the 2002 riots, Bilkis Bano was raped by 11 men and murdered her family including a tw0-month-old baby. The court ordered the culprits to report back to jail in a fortnight.
The court said that Gujarat didn’t have the jurisdiction to grant remission to the convicts. Justice Nagarathna stated that under section 432(7)(b) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Gujarat was not the appropriate government.
