26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana Remanded to 18-Day NIA Custody
A special NIA court on Friday granted 18-day custody of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He was produced before Special Judge Chander Jit Singh at Patiala House Court late Thursday night, hours after being extradited from the United States.
Rana was brought under tight security, including a convoy with a jail van, SWAT vehicle, and ambulance. The NIA had sought 20 days’ custody, citing fresh evidence — including emails exchanged between Rana and David Headley, the key plotter of the 26/11 attacks.
The agency argued that Rana’s custodial interrogation was crucial to uncover the broader conspiracy behind the attacks. The court accepted the plea and sent him to NIA custody till April 29.
