12 U.S. States Sue Trump Over Tariffs, Claiming Violation of Constitution
Twelve U.S. states have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump over his use of emergency powers to impose tariffs on foreign goods. The states, including New York, California, and Illinois, argue that the president does not have the authority to impose tariffs without approval from Congress, as required by the U.S. Constitution.
The lawsuit challenges Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977, which the states claim was intended for true national emergencies, not economic issues. The states also argue that Trump’s actions harm local businesses and consumers. This legal challenge is expected to delay the implementation of the tariffs and could take years to resolve in court.
