Pakistan Takes Strong Action in Response to India’s Suspension of Indus Water Treaty

On Thursday, April 24, Pakistan announced a series of retaliatory measures in response to India’s decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty and downgrade diplomatic ties following the Pahalgam terror attack. The country blocked its airspace for Indian airlines, closed the Wagah border crossing, and suspended all trade with India, including transit routes through third countries. Pakistan also suspended visas under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, with the exception of Sikh pilgrims. In a firm statement, the National Security Committee (NSC) made it clear that any attempt by India to divert water meant for Pakistan under the Indus Water Treaty would be considered an act of war.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the emergency meeting with key ministers and military chiefs, expressing strong condemnation of India’s actions. The Pakistani government urged India to avoid further provocative tactics and emphasized the significance of the Indus Water Treaty as vital to the survival of 240 million Pakistanis. In a final diplomatic move, Pakistan asked the Indian High Commission’s military advisers to leave by April 30, signaling escalating tensions between the two nations.
